Most of the modern day wipers have a mechanical arrangement of two things: an electric motor and a worm gear. This motor and worm gear arrangement generates sufficient amount of force which is this responsible for the back and forth motion of the wipers.

Windshield wiper motors are mostly used during the rainy season and hence require less maintenance. But as it is with various other mechanical equipments and parts, these wiper motors also tend to wear out and require proper replacements. Windshield wiper motor replacements are very easy and with proper tools this can be done at home. In order to change wiper motor the following tools are required:

• Socket set

• Tray to safely keep all screws, nuts and bolts

• Different size of screw drivers to remove screws

• Nose pliers

• A torch light

• Jumper wires

• Service manual guide

Sometimes due to a faulty relay or gear mechanism the wiper motor stops working, so you should always check the relay and gear mechanism before changing wiper motor completely. The following steps can help you in changing of wiper motor:

1: The first and foremost step involved in changing wiper motor is its disconnection from the power source which is a 12volts battery.

2: After detaching all wiper motor power connections you should try to reach out to gain access to the wiper motor. Most often the wiper motor is installed in between the engine and the driver’s compartment. For exact location you must follow the manual guide.

3: After locating the wiper motor you should use a fuse jumper wire and should bypass the motor relay. Connect the positive terminal of battery and hook the other terminal with motor’s positive end, if the motor rotates then you just need to change the relay.

4: Connect the positive end o battery with the positive end of relay, if motor rotates then check for gear arrangements and if motor does not rotates then change wiper motor by following the steps that follow.

5: In order to change wiper motor you should try to remove the grounding strap which is located inside the motor case. After carefully removing the grounding strap you should try to remove the bolt on which it is mounted.

6: After removing all the mounted bolts, you should gently try to pull the motor out from its mounted position.

7: After removing the old motor, insert all screws, nuts and bolts in your new wiper motor and mount it. Tighten all the screws and reattach the grounding strap.

8: After the successful installation connect a fuse jumper wire to the positive terminal of the battery and to the positive end of the motor, if the motor rotates then make all necessary power connections to the motor and if it does not rotate then the new motor is a defective one and you should replace it with another one.
